#WeeklyGigs June 30
HackPress: Looking after freelancers' finances, safety and social life, so they can tell the stories that matter.
Hi all,
Hope you’re having a great week. This #WeeklyGigs has an exciting announcement in it.
We are becoming a signatory to the ACOS Alliance!
Why?
We’ve worked five years with you, supporting the community and bringing you opportunities. We’ve seen many issues that members face when working with clients. COVID-19 and protests throughout the world have further demonstrated how delicate your wellbeing is. Not only are you fighting for fair pay, but you’re also being pushed to work in conflict zones or most recently, areas with health hazards.
That is why we strongly support the ACOS Alliance Principles, a comprehensive set of safety practices aimed at embedding a culture of safety across news organizations and among freelance journalists worldwide.
What are we doing?
As a community, we can use our size to negotiate beneficial terms for you and provide tools that might normally only come from large organizations. These include:
Insurance
This year, we are placing a major focus on your safety. In July, we’ll begin providing insurance to all members who conduct projects by HackPack approved clients. This way if you are injured or worse while working, you will have the peace of mind that your hospital bills are covered.
Education
HEFAT Training and protective equipment are extremely important. We’re going to launch an updated version of HackPack this summer that includes fields for you to indicate the training you’ve received as well as if you have a kevlar vest, helmet or other equipment. Clients should know how you are protected before a project and you need to think about how to protect yourself.
Bylines
Whenever you work with a HackPack approved client, we will push them to put you in the byline. Freelancers without direct access to the editor are often forgotten in the publication process. We’ll use our larger weight to encourage and enforce clients to provide recognition for who did the work.
Payments
Whenever you work with a HackPack approved client, we will manage payments to ensure you are paid on time and WITHOUT any fees. That means we cover transfer fees and all costs go to the client. THERE ARE NO ADDITIONAL FEES TO YOU.
Who is the ACOS Alliance?
The ACOS (A Culture Of Safety) Alliance is a coalition of more than 100 news organizations, freelance journalist associations and press freedom NGOs working together to champion safe and responsible journalistic practices for freelance and local journalists worldwide.
The Alliance implements effective, practical initiatives including training and resources, that help newsrooms and journalists meet the basic standards outlined in the Freelance Journalist Safety Principles and leverages the combined strength of its signatories to to develop long-term solutions to on-going safety challenges, such as insurance. Its current resources cover issues such as contract negotiation, COVID-19 and newsroom safety protocols.
Have ideas or suggestions on what you find to be key to your safety? Send us an email at justin.varilek@hackpack.press and we’ll see if we can begin addressing that issue too.
Now on to the #WeeklyGigs - Your source of the best grant opportunities, trainings and jobs around the world.
